Using A APC UPS With Linux

A UPS is a great way to protect your system from power outages. Below is a guide to set a managed UPS with Linux.

Install The Software

apt-get install apcupsd

Modify Required APCUPSD File

gedit /etc/default/apcupsd

Change the file so that the line ""ISCONFIGURED=NO"" now reads ""ISCONFIGURED=YES""

Connect the UPS

You can check to see if it was picked up properly by viewing the log files.

grep -i ups /var/log/*

Change APCUPSD Configuration File

gedit /etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf

Modify the following entries to reflect the following:

UPSNAME homeups1 UPSCABLE usb UPSTYPE usb DEVICE ONBATTERYDELAY 6 BATTERYLEVEL 5 MINUTES 3 TIMEOUT 0

Test The UPS Connection

apctest

Restart The UPS Daemon

sudo /etc/init.d/apcupsd restart

View Current Status Of UPS

apcaccess

View Log Of UPS Events

sudo tail -f /var/log/apcupsd.events
