IPROUTE Configure Network Via Console

Veteran users will remember ifconfig however this is slowly but surely being replaced with the iproute command. Below is some basic examples on how to configure your network configuration via iproute.

Bring Up And Down eth0

ip link set eth0 up
ip link set eth0 down

Auto Config Using DHCP

sudo dhclient eth0

Set A Ip Address

Below we set the IP to 10.1.1.10 and the netmask 255.255.255.0

ip addr add 10.1.1.10 255.255.255.0 dev eth0

Determine IP Address Information For An Interface

Use any of the following to list the information and configuration for an interface

ip addr ls
ip addr show
ip addr ls eth0

Set Default Gateway

sudo ip route add default via 192.168.1.1

Display Routing Table

ip ro

Addng A Route

ip ro add 10.0.0.0/16 via 192.168.0.1

Delete A Route

ip ro del 10.0.0.0/16 via 192.168.0.1

Find The Route To A IP Address

Replace IPADDRESS with the numbered ip address of the destination machine.

ip route get IPADDRESS

Finding the LAN Neighbours IP and MAC addresses

ip neigh
