This guide is for raspbian versions jessie or later... if you are using a version of raspbian earlier than jessie see my other guide here


You can listen to audio from the PI but in order to record you need to use a sound card as the pi only has audio out. I used a USB plantronics as my sound card, and the following is a guide to have it set up and made your main sound card


Edit your local soundrc file



Insert into this new file the following



Do the same for /etc/asound.conf


Reboot


When you run the command "amixer" it should show your new usb sound card as default and allow you to record from the mic input....lets test this



And now play it back



You should now hear what the mic recorded...if you need to change the levels of the mic or speaker use "alsamixer" to edit them.. then store those settings via
