1:1 Choke Balun With 3D Printed Enclosure
Depending on who you talk to some will say a 1:1 choke balun is not necessary others will say a must have. Either way your antenna system will never be hurt by having one. You can use a air choke made by turning coax on a cylinder but that will only be good for one band and it will not compete with a good balun made from ferrite rings or cores.
After doing some research on http://www.karinya.net/g3txq/chokes/ I decided on doing 12 turns on a type 31 ferrite. I suggest popping on that site and looking at the bands you plan to use and use the appropriate ferrite and turns.
I did bring it over to a friends place, he had a VNA analyzer and I wish I took some screen shots but it worked out well and it was on par with
the site with regards to its choking capabilities across the bands I wanted.
Not happy with the enclosures I had in the shack I went and modeled up one with a curved top to help with rain run off.
Et Voila!...place this just after your antenna before your feedline goes to your radio and you should have great results.
